Use the past tense when referring to what has been done in the experiment, but use present tense when talking about most everything else, such as scientific concepts, explanations, and references to articles. In addition, I think it's actually very good practice for getting across your thoughts about the science you are doing in a manner that the reader can understand.
Also, show all of your work. Never scratch something out completely. Even when your methods and technique are sound and your notes are comprehensive, writing a report can be a challenge because organizing and communicating scientific findings requires patience and a thorough grasp of certain conventions.
