Though the Joads were a fictitious family, I was able to identify with many signs of hope that they could hold onto. This novel, The Grapes of Wrath, relates to some of the many times of violence and cruelty that this America has seen.

The land which seems to be a heaven with great work, little white houses, and many acres of land. It is interesting to note that even Steinbeck himself, while publicly assailing those same critics, was privately never quite sure of the quality of his work, feeling like it was somehow not worthy of a truly great author cf. Through the depiction of events and portrayal of characters, the bible takes part in the novel as one whole allusion. Like the lyrics say, they hold on to hope that there will come a time of no more suffering Steinbeck also used intercalary chapters to provide some of the background information.
